The power of Young India

"If not me, then who? If not now, then when?"

Abdul Kalam in one of his speeches mentioned, “The great challenge of transforming India can be achieved through youth which has got the power of ideas, ambition and ability.”  Young India is a creating a revolution and how. The percentage population of Indian Youth is around 65%.  And today if we see, the entire nation, in a way, is handled by the youngsters of our country. They are not only coming up with bright and innovative ideas to transform the society as a whole, but are also propagating the importance to be responsible citizens to the elders! This was proved in the recent revolution against corruption. Anna Hazare was supported mainly by youngsters. Also, Ruben Macarenhans, 23, is a founder member of IAC (India against Corruption).  Youngsters were seen in large numbers across India demanding a strong draft of the Jan LokPal Bill. The most important part was that, they encouraged other people to do so too. Their strong voices coupled with immense patriotism and a strong sense of duty towards the citizens made a huge impact on the entire event.

Many other youth organisations are also making their impact felt and are creating waves of transformation in the society. They are independent, thoughtful, and active and are willing to be passionate volunteers for various causes. WAYE (World Alliance for Youth Empowerment) is a voluntary organisation formed by two IIT-ians in their 20s. The organisation has been expanding at a great rate since it was established in the year 2004. They have been teaching courses called YES! + (Youth Empowerment and Skills Workshop) which aim at an overall development of 18-30 year old making them responsible and law abiding citizens.

The power of Young India doesnot ceases to grow. It is touching every sector. IT industry in India today has reached its zenith because of its young people! Call centres are booming because of them. Today many young people are working as the heads and CEOs of various companies. And not stopping at this, many are starting up their own ventures with innovative themes on sustainable, ecological and creative businesses. They are exploring new and existing resources like never before. Who had thought that a simple act of SMSing (considered a “useless” rage by some elder people) would create such an impact on various issues like limit on alcohol age issue, do not drink and drive, corruption( Jail bharo andolan, Thali Rally etc.) They have been harnessing technology for reasons no one might have thought of. Using Face book to gather people in a marathon, rally etc. It sounds so usual now, but was not earlier. In fact there were forecasts that these things would have a negative impression on the young people.

In retrospect, there was a large gap between the rural and urban youngsters. Rural youths were supposed to be villagers and illiterates having less knowledge. But due to penetration of technology and educational facilities in the villages and rural areas and due to many laws which help the poor learn, the scene is totally different today. Rural youths are in fact leading in many ways. They are realising that to make a self sufficient village, education is of utmost important. And to do this event their parents are working hard so that the youth after learning provide valuable input on village development.

There is much more power to be unleashed. Not everyone has realised the true potential of the Indian Youth. This is because there are many who think that the youth is going in the wrong direction, not paying heed to Indian tradition or culture and aping western ways. But this has thought has been challenged by the youth. They are also responsible for creating an equalitarian society where there are equal opportunities for everyone. They are taking stands on almost all issues regarding the country be it economics, social or political.

The biggest asset for India is its youth. The diagram below proves that. While other countries might be struggling to recruit young people for various jobs, India won’t be.
The young are doing everything that earlier was thought to be unconventional. The only thing that is now essential is to develop their minds and train them to have an entrepreneur attitude. They also need to be encouraged to have a spirit of enquiry. They have to be empowered and encouraged toward making this world a better place.
