THE POWER OF YOUNG INDIA

"Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others... he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."  -- Robert F. Kennedy (1925 - 1968)
Rightly said! There is a great potential in young people. It is like dynamite. Dynamite can do great good when used in the right way. It can pave the way for new buildings, schools, lakes, highways, and numerous other projects which will benefit mankind. In the wrong hands, though, it can be used to take life, often thousands of lives. Young people have the same potential for good or bad.

So, who is the new young Indian? What defines the youth? Definitely, youth of the twenty first century is more informed and so, more opinionated. This is a natural outcome of media exposure to the Western thought patterns and cultures. Youth make up about 34% of the total population of the country. This 34% constitutes for the country's future. If we can harness this powerhouse of the nation in the right direction then the country can reach untold heights. All we need is to direct the energy of our youth in constructive channels that lead to development and progress. The creative potential of the younger generation coupled with their zeal, enthusiasm, energy and versatility can work wonders for the country. We need to empower our youth so that they can make a better tomorrow. What most people fail to recognize is the stratification within the core of the youth. Young people are as varied as the rest. Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll is not every young person’s story. Like at any other time, the youth is mostly confused regarding life and choices. There is a need for a proper orientation and inspiration. Young people need idols and guidance. In these times of changes, there are still some   who start working very soon following the traditional pattern of survival in the society where in from the beginning the boys were taught that it would be an honor to lay down their lives for Fatherland and leaders. The girls were taught that it was their duty to bear children and obey the leaders. But the rest of us have come much ahead of this mentality. We believe in living for us and for our country!

The best and the first and foremost way to strengthen our youth are to provide them education. Not just any kind of education, but the right kind of education which makes them scientific, logical, open-minded, self-respecting, responsible, honest and patriotic. Without these virtues being developed, our youth cannot walk in the desired way and they will remain in a deep slumber of complacency.

Though some need to be taught the remaining youth count has become dynamic and participating and believes in raising the voice at every required time slot. Today India has become a country where the youth of today are considered as pillars of tomorrow. Young people are now more aware of the changes going on in their lives and in the world around them. Young people have the power and the energy. They talk fast. Think fast. And go about their business fast! Increasingly, young people are learning to contribute meaningfully to our contemporary world. They want their voices to be heard. They want to express their passions in meaningful ways.

Be it business, politics, sports or the entertainment industry, young people are at the forefront of innovation and change such as Sachin Tendulkar, Vishwanathan Anand, Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupati, Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, P.T. Usha, Anju B George, Rajiv Gandhi, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Jaspal Rana, Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Anil Kumble, Rahul Gandhi, Dilip Tirkey, Kalpana Chawla, Apama Popat, Malleshwari etc. The very mention of these names fills the heart of an average Indian with pride. They are brimming with ideas and they cannot seem to stop talking about change, adventure and pursuing their potentials and their passions. And they are full of creativity and imagination.

The Youth Today knows the means to articulate their questions with respect to their fundamental rights or to the injustice done without the fear of being threatened or rejected. The youth hopes for a world free of poverty, unemployment, inequality and exploitation and a world free of discrimination on the grounds of race, color, language and gender. But a world full of creative challenges and opportunities to conquer them.
Youth is wholly experimental and with the full utilization of the talents of the Youth, India will become a complete Nation. Let us hope for the same.
